Yangi™ presents breakthrough in barrier development for dry formed fibers

Yangi has made a breakthrough in developing grease and water-resistant packaging for takeaway solutions, which fulfills the requirements for recyclability and barrier performance for food on the go. The result is a socially and environmentally sustainable replacement solution to both plastic and wet moulded takeaway packaging products.

The successful results have been achieved through a combination of cellulose functionalisation and optimisation of the application technology in the Yangi technology platform. Today we can achieve promising results using commercially available solutions, but we see even larger potential in future development work. The current development guarantees water and oil hold out for cold takeaway applications and ongoing research indicates a scalable barrier performance for application in a wide variety of packaging categories.

“This milestone in barrier performance and application optimization accelerates our development capacity and opens up for further functionalization of the cellulose material designed for our dry forming technology”, says Maria Gunnarsson, senior specialist in cellulose chemistry and responsible for chemical functionalisation of dry formed packaging at Yangi.

The challenge is that commercially available barrier chemicals for fiber-based packaging are designed for wet processes. A major gain in the future is to develop functional chemistry that is adapted for dry forming. This means that there is potential to achieve even better product performance, improved environmental performance, and at lower cost. Yangi works intensively in various research consortiums and with industrial partners to develop future barrier solutions for dry formed packaging.
